Fourteen years ago we saw an ad in the Thrifty Nickel for a Sheltie puppy in Aurora for $50. So my 12 year old daughter Maddie, her friend Alex, our 5 year old female Sheltie, Rosie, and I piled into our Toyota Rav and drove from Fort Collins to Aurora to see for ourselves. We found two tiny puppies with their haggard looking Sheltie mom in a junky yard. One puppy looked like a long nosed Sheltie and the other was a confused mix. The Sheltie-looking puppy was as small as a beanie baby and fit on the palm of my hand. He couldn’t have been more than six weeks old. We introduced him to Rosie, who took to him immediately. We couldn’t hand over the $50 cash fast enough. While driving away Aurora, we all said to the tiny pup, you are one lucky dog to be coming home with us and away from such a humble start. That is how Lucky got his name. What we didn’t know is how lucky we were to have received into our family the most loving, caring and noble dog we could have ever imagined. This tiny dog grew into a handsome and smart lad and helped us deal with the many challenges and obstacles that life threw at us. Thank you Lucky. You were an angel with fur instead of wings and I will miss your soulful eyes and constant companionship. Farewell dear friend.
